About the Fellows Program

The FIDS Labs Africa Fellows program is a competitive 6 months program where program participants work together with FIDS Labs Africa staff on a specific project of interest to FIDS Labs Africa and within the technical expertise of the fellow.

The program provides an opportunity to the fellow to work on a real world practical AI project that is potentially impactful to the societal context of FIDS Labs Africa. The fellowship can be conducted part-time or full-time, online or physically at the FIDS Labs Africa offices depending on the nature of the project. This fellowship also suits BSc, MSc, PhD students and PostDoc researchers where there is alignment in research goals.

Fellowships are largely unpaid but reasonable expenses may be reimbursed depending on the nature of the project. Each fellow will be assigned a sponsor/scientific advisor in FIDS Labs Africa who will be primarily responsible for ensuring the project is executed in a timely manner.

Eligibility

• BSc students (final year or recent graduates)
• MSc students (current or recent graduates)
• PhD students (any stage)
• Post-Doctoral researchers
• Alignment with FIDS Labs Africa research goals

How to Apply

Before applying ensure you have some understanding of the projects FIDS Labs Africa is undertaking and how you can align your specific interests with any of the projects. To apply please submit the following documents:

• Letter of motivation: Briefly describe why you think FIDS Labs Africa is the right place for you to fellowship and what experience or skills you have can contribute to the mission of FIDS Labs Africa.
• Project plan: Fellowships last usually 6 months, so outline a project you have previously talked about with someone in FIDS Labs Africa. How does this project align to the goal of societal impact? Outline a plan of execution for the period of the fellowship.
• Any other supporting documentation: This could include a link to your GitHub repo, papers you have authored that are relevant to the project or a recommendation letter. These are optional.

About the Internship Program

The FIDS Labs Africa internship program is a 3 months program where students at university or research institutes can spend 3 months working with FIDS Labs Africa on projects of interest to both parties. The internship is mainly targeted at equipping the candidate with industry experience in the field of machine learning and computer science.

The program provides an opportunity to the intern to work on a real world practical AI project that is potentially impactful to the societal context of FIDS Labs Africa. The internship can be conducted part-time or full-time, online or physically at the FIDS Labs Africa offices depending on the nature of the project.

The student internship program is an unpaid internship where the candidate benefits from interfacing with leading AI professionals and software and hardware developers working on exciting for-social-good projects.

Requirements

• Currently enrolled university or research institute student
• Basic knowledge of computer programming in Python language
• Minimum understanding of machine learning concepts
• GitHub portfolio is a significant advantage
• For hardware roles: working understanding of embedded systems

How to Apply

Before applying, ensure you have basic programming knowledge in Python for those applying for software development, machine learning or data science internships. For interns targeting our hardware section, please ensure you have working understanding of embedded systems. Your aptitude in this regard will be verified as part of the recruitment process.
